WAIS Family Diversity Night: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage and Community

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, “WAIS Family Diversity Night” brought the school community together for a vibrant celebration of culture at the Westminster Academy of International Studies earlier this month.

The evening was filled with the sounds of music and laughter as students opened the night with joyful songs and children twirled in traditional folklórico dresses. Tables overflowed with homemade favorites like tamales, Gelatina de Mosaico, Peruvian specialties, Venezuelan desserts, and many other dishes representing the rich flavors of Hispanic cultures.

“Celebrating diversity is essential in an international studies school,” said Fay Airomlo, principal at WAIS, “It helps students understand and appreciate the many cultures, perspectives, and experiences that shape our world.”

The PTA helped transform the school into a colorful festival, organizing dances and arts and crafts activities for everyone to participate. The much-anticipated event not only celebrated Hispanic heritage, but also reflected the inclusive spirit of WAIS—where finding commonalities across cultures adds to the unique identity of the international school.

“It builds empathy, respect, and a sense of global citizenship, preparing students to collaborate and lead in diverse environments,” says Principal Airomlo. “By honoring diversity, we create a school community where every student feels valued, seen, and inspired to learn from one another.”
