Focusing on What Matters: Our New Student Device Policy

This is a season of promise and optimism for Westminster Public Schools. As part of our "student-first" approach, we are taking proactive, innovative steps to ensure our schools remain spaces of deep focus, authentic connection, and emotional well-being.

Why the Change?

There is a growing nationwide concern regarding the impact of personal devices on the educational experience and social-emotional health of students. To address this, the Colorado Legislature passed House Bill 25-1135, requiring all districts to implement clear expectations for student cell phone use by July 2026.

Policy JICJ: Starting 2026-2027

The WPS Board of Education has officially approved Policy JICJ. Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, we are setting new standards to minimize digital distractions during the school day. While specific implementation details will come from your school’s principal, the goal is simple: Bell-to-Bell, Away for the Day.

Our "student-first" philosophy means prioritizing active learning over screen time. By setting these boundaries, we help our children stay focused, connected, and healthy.

Leading by Example

We aren’t just asking students to change their habits; our staff is committed to “walking the talk.” Through our Staff Procedure (GBEE-R2), staff will keep personal phones silenced and out of sight during instructional time unless they are being used to directly support instruction or communication with families. This approach ensures a strong focus on students while modeling purposeful, responsible use of technology.

Stay Informed

We invite you to read the full policy on our district website. We are excited to take this proactive step toward a more engaged and healthy learning environment for every student in Westminster Public Schools.
